I need help identifying two buttons.

I found these two button at a house site in Fredericksburg VA and I cannot figure out what type they are. Any idea's?

The one that says TEXMEX is all rusted and the star has writing on it but I can't read it

My best guess is the Mexican American war which ended in 1848. I'm not sure about buttons but that is what I would think.

A soldier could have brought them home and then lost them. Or I could be way off. Try searching buttons from that era and see if you can figure it out. Nice find!!
