I posted a picture last summer when I only had one and no one could identify the item. I now have 3 (from separate locations) and still have no idea what they are. Any ideas at all? I don't believe they are from a bbq but they may have ignited something at some time.

The inside looks like a fuse. Old class a threaded fuse?

I looked up Electrical Brushes, Magnetos', Spark Plugs, Glow Plugs, even hardware makers marks. I found "Squat". Good luck. Look into background of where your detecting to get a better clue.

I'm sure I have seen those before, but I can't think where or on what. It definitely appears to be some sort of ignition device. Searching piezo igniters was no good. rick67 is right, more information on where they were found, might help target searches.

I'm taking a shot in the dark (pun intended)...

Carbon arc lamp part.

The locations are a Masonic Lodge which used to be a school, an old house a few km's away from the lodge and the shore of Lake Huron...300 kms from the other two finds. I don't think the location is of any help but that's for the suggestions.

It looks to me as though these were supposed to be serviceable items, with the ceramic portion being replaceable, just held in by the ring of retainer clips. Just possibly removing one would reveal a makers mark (or something?) that would help answer this?

Can you push the ceramic center piece down? Is there a spring under the ceramic center piece? Definitely something to do with spark and/or ignition of a gas.

Txflag i think is real close, here is some old antique screw in fuses and how they would of worked

If you cant get any movement out of that cap stamped with A like a button i dont think it is a ignitor, or if a sparker then no wire so cant be that.

Got to be a fuse or some kind, would explain why alot of em were laying around.

Thanks for trying to figure this out. There are no markings at all other than the "A"..nothing on the inside either.

I DO think it's an igniter of some sort or the arc lamp suggestion. We're just seeing half of it....not the part it screws into. I suspect this section is the ground portion and that the spark jumps across from the other section to this one. Otherwise, I can't see any purpose for the carbon center. A fuse wouldn't use a carbon connection.

I agree......but I can't find anything close to it when I'm searching the interweb.

My best guess is that it is part of an overheat electical shut off.

Surge arresters for phone and/or data lines. Generally you will find these in a box similar to a fuse or breaker box, but with phone or data lines attached instead if electrical lines.

Hope this helps.

They are a old type of surge protector for the phone connection.
