Went out to a old Ghost town with camb1 for a short hunt after work.I think this is a Half cent it is a little bigger then a 2 center and the same size as a quarter.I took it to work and It is 23.7 mm and weights 4.61 grams. If anyone has a Idea what it is please help. Thanks for looking !!!! The coin on the left is a large cent.

I take it tbucket can't See anything on it, or else he would've said as much in the original post.

The size seems right, but the weight seems too low... I don't know that a copper could've worn enough to be that light. Don in SJ will know, however--and I hope he chimes in on this thread at some point.

Not going to hazard a guess cuz I'd probably would be wrong, nice finds though!

Re: I think I found a Half Cent

Hey, Gary.

The weights I gave you last night on the half-cents don't match your coin. As Buckles said, yours is a little on the light side in comparison. But the size is pretty close to a Classic Head Half Cent. I'm not sure the loss of copper from the hole and the worn nature of your coin could make up nearly .85-.90 grams, but it may be possible. I guess we will never know unless there was some detail to it. :icon_scratch:

Congrats on an old find at your ghost town.

Nice Job T....Buckle's you said absolutely nothing positive :icon_scratch:

Put the steel wool to it, you will be amazed at the detail you will get. Nice hunt.

Re: I think I found a Half Cent

Without handling the coin, cannot say from the pics, the weight and size are within reason I have a 1797 Liberty Cap Half Cent that is holed and weighs 5.02 grams, but I also have a Classic Head Half Cent that weighs 4.66 grams, not holed. Most of the Half Cents are well into the mid 5 grams range in general.

I didn't know I was required to say something positive. :icon_scratch:

I thought the weight of the coin was Low for a half cent. I was giving information. Information is neutral, but it IS information. That's how I roll. I like to give as much information as I can abour folks' finds. Sorry.

After hearing from Don, it appears that the coin is still within weight range--which is WAY cool, considering the fact that those HC's Seldom circulated outside of the New England and East Coast areas.

Congrats on the find. Since it's absolutely worthless in an unidentifiable state, I would venture to very carefully start cleaning it. Stay away from the date area as that is about the only thing that I can barely see. There were no Half Cents issued in 1839. Maybe you have a token of some sort. The only way to find any info on what you have is to start cleaning it. Once you can identify it then you will have something to investigate.
Good Luck
Waiting to see what this turns out to be.

Hey, Gary. I just saw your cleaned pic.

John987 is right....I don't believe a Half Cent was ever minted in 1839. :icon_scratch:

Are you sure the last number is a 9?

That's interesting, it almost looks like the image of the seated liberty in that last pic...sure it's not silver, right? Anyway, great finds regardless! Keep it up
