So today I found this single item at a cellar whole. At first I thought it was a piece of garbage until I cleaned it. This piece of metal says 1 compy Lt infantry 10 regt. I'm curious of it period the script is very old looking . And on the back there's evidence of solder where it was attached to something. Is it an early belt plate? I just don't know what it is. Any help would be most appreciated thanks in advance- Justin

Looks about the right size and shape for a heel piece. But I could be way off on that one.

The more I look at it the more I think it's a heel plate. Those small holes could have been for nails to nail it to the heel of the boot. The lettering looks early. Probably wasn't worn long enough to wear it down!

Thank you for your input but it's not a heal plate it's it's 4 inches long by 3 1/4 wide.

I measured the heel of my shoe and it is 3 1/2 wide by almost 4 inches long. Just sayin'. If it's not a heel plate it could easily be mistaken for one.

I say heel plate - You can see the holes were they nailed it to the underside of the shoe. Looks exactly like the tap plates I took off my daughters shoe's, just a bit bigger.

is there actually enough holes and in the right place for it to be from a boot?

All the holes are in between the wording like dots and they don't go all the way through. Excep for 2 the one next to the I or 1 and the one at the end of g

I'm guessing militia cap/shako plate.

I am not leaning toward a boot plate either... Who would painstakingly engrave this on a plate that is (1) not practical as it would be slippery when wet, (2) never going to be seen? I can't imagine it being an identifier for a battlefield coroner either, who would know to check the heel plate for identification? Also, the "1" in "1 Compy" is actually "I Compy." (EYE company.) This regiment was formed in 1855 and saw a lot of action in the Civil War, according to a historical website : Tenth Regiment of Infantry I am thinking this was an ID plate made for some kind of equipment box. Just my uneducated, unwashed opinion...I think it is a SUPER find! Congrats, Sub 8-)

Dc Matt the shape looks dead on for a shako plate and subterranean I agree it's I and not a 1.

I find a number of examples of "tombstone" shako plates on the internet. Most are painted. All have some sort of eagle or image. None are quite this simple. And it's difficult to judge the size compared to this one. It seems a little small for a shako plate. Don't know what else it could be tho. Nice find.

In what city/county did you find this? I'm trying the "10th Regiment" angle for research. I'm thinking think plate is late 18th - early 19th C.

I was thinking the same thing the script is an older style I've seen on dandy buttons. It was found in hartland ct which is on the border of mass.

Super nice! Thankfully you didn't pass it up or toss it without looking at it a little closer. I'm sure it's another nice piece of history you've added to your collection. Congrats!

I went out detecting this evening and for some reason got thinking about this piece some more. I thought "Yeah there's no way they'd put lettering on a heel plate". But I never would have thought of a hat piece. Nice find!!
