What would have been it's use?

Hey Breezie,

I gotta thank you again for the Green Kool-aid Recipe. I have been having hours of fun trying to get the crud off these old crusty guys. The parrot is about half decrusted. The back is still very verdigris, and rough. I don't know if I should soak it some more or not...

I got the pennies about 92% decrusted. The ground has not been kind to them. Does it occasionally eat the face right off'a copper coins?

Just an impression, I've gotten having done only a couple pans so far., is the difference between lemon juices... I switched to the little plastic "reconstituted' lemon juice, and I think it decrusts with somewhat less vigor than the juice of a fresh squoze lemon. What the heck is "reconstituted." anyway. 8-)

Will the smoke and vaseline treatment help in appearance, or preservation?

I gotta Good Luck swastika token taking the Creme de Menthe bath now.

I think it may be a saloon token from Detroit. It seems to have this on one side:

Surf, you're as welcome as the flowers in Spring . . .well, that is if it ever gets warm enough to be Spring. As far as your spirits are concerned, I use Food Lion brand lemon juice; comes in a green bottle. It's supposed to be 100% pure lemon juice, plus it doesn't make you salivate like rolling real lemons. (You're swallowing now just thinking about cutting a real lemon or worse biting a lemon.):tongue3: After I clean off the crud, I wash with clear water, then coat with a light layer of Vaseline.

I'm not sure if the Kool-aid would eat the face off or not, but I would think because it is an acid, it would continue to work/burn.

Hey Breezie,

Here's a token update, and a request for a critique on my Lemon Kool-aiding, please.

Do they usually come outta the soup looking kinda scalded?

I think this piece may be brass plated low quality metal. I'm amazed that it became legible at all.

The soil in these privies & dumps seems to be very harsh on some of the coins. Is that what the MD folk call "mineralized?"

I don't know if more Kool-aid will remove the last of the verdigris, or not, but was reluctant to over soak them. Is the easterly Indian half done, or fried beyond all rehabilitation?

Anyways, I was not exactly pleased with the scalded look and remembered a smoke & vaseline treatment I had read about and tried that.

Should I be pleased, or go back for more margaritas?

Hey Surf Shugar, Bigfoot said a mouthful; you can't bring back what is gone. Considering how the soil toasted your finds, I think you've done a hellava job! Some of those were unrecognizable until they were Kool-aid-ed. (my new word)

Thanks Breezie & Bigfoot,

Now that I'm a token carrying member of the Don't Worry Club, I'm pleased as can be with the results. I've got some more crusty guys doing the backstroke in a cup of Lemon Kool-aid now.

Is it okay to mix metals in the Kool-aid soak? That is, I didn't realize the Gold Dollar Bar token was brass plated, while it soaked next to the copper pennies. I think I may have a V nickel in the soup now with some of the other crusty guys? Should different metals be segregated, or done one at a time, if the metal type is unknown?

In case anyone is interested in the history of the Going Places, 1898-1920: The Don't Worry Movement, there's an old NY Times piece from 1903, A Short Tale of the Don't Worry Club - Article - NYTimes.com

Thanks again for all your help in the decrusting process.

I wonder if this is their theme song? :tongue3:

As far as segregation is concerned, I generally try to keep the likes together, that is, if I know the likes. If not, it's every item for itself. I've never been able do much with nickels. Here, they generally come out of the ground 'red,' or so corroded there's very little improvement.

Thanks for the fabulous information contained in this post! I've got so many encrusted goodies at home that could use this exact cocktail. I can't wait to give it a try!:icon_thumright:
