i took a ride to florence junction today
i took a ride to FJ today to find the locations of the gas stations and get some pics.....i found both sites....the texaco station and the shell station...the texaco station was on the south side of the old highway as you were entering florence junction from the west...all the foundations are still there including the underground fuel tank....you can see the old cast iron pipes exposed in some places..apparently they didn't have to be very deep back then..no EPA...i took a pic that matches the horizon in the postcard shot from the 1940's...the shell station was a little further east about where highway 79 meets highway 60...it was obviously the same location as the sunkist station from in the pic from 1934...i took a pic that matched the horizon behind the station site...there are still some foundations at the sunkist site but it is now blocked off with fences and gates and a few hateful no trespassing signs...the sight of the present gas station is about 1/4 mile further east on the old highway....i couldnt post a pic of the sunkist station from 1934 but here is a link the the pic:
