I have a great place to hunt, and have been doing so for over a year with my Quick Draw II. It has found lots of stuff ...about 40 IH's, dozens of mercs and barbers, and around 175 wheaties (mostly teens,20's, and 30's) I just recently found a GeorgeII halfpence with it. The QDII has done very well.
Most of these coins have been less than 5 inches deep. Now I'm interested in those deeper coins. I feel sure they are there. I believe I need to upgade to another machine. One that will find them.
Any suggestions? I am limited to what I can spend. Something like $5-600 is all. The area isnt what I would consider trashy although some other places I like to hunt are. I'm in a limestone farming valley in central Pa. and there is a few old Iron ore mines around. The ore really hasnt bothered the QDII.
I would even consider an Ace 250 if I thought it would get me deeper.
Thanx for your thoughts....W

If we say so, the more discrimination the less depth...(often)
If much trash in the area you don't even have to think about an large coil else it would be an option.
And mineralisation will probably also be a problem if it's extreme. As it can lessen your depth and/or mask target(s)
One last thing, quality headphones will also help you to hear those deep targets.

I would give a long hard look at the Nautilus line of detectors. they have models right at $600. there are a couple of forums for Nautulis on other sites and they have one the GNRS 3 OUT OF THE last 4 years

I would recommend the Fisher ID edge or if a meter isn't important the Tesoro Vaquero.

At present Nautilus seems to have the edge on depth. But they are a bit heavy if you have ever had your shoulder broken (twice for me), you know what i'm speaking of. Tesoro units are right on their heels. Both offer units in the price range you mentioned...have a good'un

Thanx for the suggestions. I looked at the Tesoro and Nautilus machines. They are contenders. Any more suggestions? I also looked at the Fisher, but kinda want to wait and see what happens with them since 1st Texas bought them. I wonder what the Nautilus warranty is, do they have their own website? I didnt come across it.

thanx...WZ

I bought my Tesoro Cibola used for $250. They're out there. It'll detect as deep as I want to dig!!!!!!

Hey Wainzoid...Welcome to the site. Just my opinion, but you're doing pretty well there bud. Barbers and Indians have probably been laying there for 100 years or better. Maybe the soil you're working is hard enough to stop them at 5". Sounds that way to me. Since you're finding them all in one area, I'd kick her into all metal and dig everything. Unless you're set on getting another detector, I'd go for a coil upgrade for more depth first. Good luck either way~CO2

Wainzoid,
Just something to consider here, but if I'm not mistaken most items will sink into the ground until they reach a point where the ground and the item have the same density. With this in mind you might want to do as another member has already suggested, save the big investment and either try a used unit or a larger coil until you're sure there are actually deeper targets to be had. Or better yet, barrow another unit if you can and see what happens. Just a thought.....?

I heard somewhere that Natulis won again . I think that makes 4 wins for them if I'm not mistaken . The other posters had good suggestions but the edge doesn't seem to have much notice . Don't know why . Renting or borrowing a deeper detector seems like a good idea as maybe there isn't anything deeper . HH

Sorry about my last post . I meant to say the excell doesn't seem to be very pouplar . The edge gets pretty good reviews . :-[

i just picked up a used t-2 FOR 500, feels real solid, think I'm going to love this unit, bit differant than the whites I'm use to.

The ACE 250 will not get you any more depth that what you are used too with your BH. Check the classifieds here, check with the web gut in the earlier post, check your local dealer and/or pawn shops and get either a used White's, Tesero or Nautilus. (stay away from the "budget" models of these, as they are in the leage of your BH) In my opinion, the older the machine, the better. When they start digitizing these things and putting auto ground balance and taking the adjustments out of the users hands, you lose depth. Since most THers now don't have the patience to learn how to MD, the manufacturers produce the turn on and go machines and sacrafice the ability. IF you notice, the "higher end" the machine, the more "manual" adjustments.

The fewer number of knobs and buttons on the machine = less depth and fewer finds

Also, be sure to go out after a hard freeze, this will "push" the coins UP closer to the surface, and in the spring/summer go out right after a rain, the damp ground will enhance, magnify and multiply your machines ability to find deeper targets.

If you can't stand be be in All Metal (max depth) only mask Iron as to not limit your ability to go deep.

For places that aren't too trashy, you can get the 10" coil for about $40 shipped from www.amazon.com It will go deeper if the ground isn't extremely mineralized.

The Fisher F4 should be available early April $499 MSRP ($425 from most dealers). They essentially took the Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300 or Titan XD-3000(?) and made it go a little deeper, separate a little better, gave it a faster recovery speed so you can sweep a little faster, made it work with rechargables & gave it a double D coil for higher ground mineralization areas & decent separation while covering a slightly larger area. The package also includes a 4" coil for extreme trash. I *think* the 10" concentric coil for the other Bounty Hunters is the same one that is offered as an option for the F4?? You can read a review of the Fisher F4 at www.losttreasure.com HH, George (MN)

My vote is for the Minelab Explorer 2. You can pick up a good used one fairly reasonable now that everyone is going for the SE and if it isn't too trash go with a WOT. Now you got deep
