So is the consistency like a colored obsidian, but not volcanic in nature? Sorry for all the questions, I just think that it’s really neat.

Yes it works exactly like obsidian except it is generally small, fractured pieces. TSU laser scanned a bunch of my artifacts and then I showed them an exposure about 20 miles from me. There was a grad student writing a paper on lithic sourcing . They said this was the first time they had matched an artifact to its exact lithic source using the Lazer .

Anyway, back to your question, the readout was virtually identical to western obsidian except for a few local minerals.

there is a lot of interesting links about MFG. I was 100% unaware of this stuff. Years ago I got my hands on some Libyan desert glass artifacts, but this stuff is way cooler!

I found an old paper on it mentioning finding a Clovis point made of it around present day Sam Rayburn lake. “Specimen 759, found at the Lucas Creek locality, is of special interest because it is made of fused volcanic glass from the Manning Formation, and it is the oldest artifact known to have been made of this kind of lithic material (previously, the oldest known artifacts made of Manning fused glass were San Patrice points)”. Im sure that base would be up there in age as well.

The manning formation is the same formation that I find petrified wood in around the lakes just the eastern side. I’m curious if that type of material is deposited around there.

I have a damaged Clovis and another probable Clovis made of MFG. Both are blue with no red. The base I posted was likely Plainview. I have several san patrice.

Is it deposited all through the formation or just in very specific spots?

Here are some little cores I once had. The natives struck flakes from them until they were very small. Almost too small to be utilitarian. Maybe the flakes were used as jewelry.

I gave these

to Jim Hopper and he made some stunning birdies from them.

Man that would have made some really desirable trade goods. I’m sure they knew of all the good spots to get the stuff too.
