ID NORM was a very good upgrade in my view. Makes things much simpler having the same ID across the frequencies. Now that we have that available I wonder why we wouldn't just set it and forget it, using it as our default setting. Any comments?

Turning ID Norm to "on" normalizes all the VDIs across all the frequencies to the 18KHz frequency. Desirable US targets end up being compressed into the high 80s and 90s VDI range--that can really make it difficult to distinguish the difference between many of the US coins. It's much easier to memorize and react to the VDIs provided in 4KHz which are spread out nicely. Ver 3.2 gives us the ability to normalize only to the 18KHz set of VDIs, but many of us Deus users are hoping the next upgrade will allow us to normalize to any of the other freqs we choose.

BTW, this Deus section of Tnet is not nearly as active or as informative as the Deus section of Findmall...you can find many of these types of questions/answers over there to increase your learning pace. Good luck Colonel!

I leave mine on all the time. I've had the DEUS for only 1.5 months so I am just learning it this way. But I am a relic hunter in farm fields so I dig it all anyhow.

ggossage---thank you for the info! I'll check it out.

Cross Potent--Seems you and I are in the same boat so to speak. I intend to keep mine on all the time also...at least until I become more familiar with the Deus.

Smart call!

I don't like my VDIs normalized. The not normalized setting(default) allows you to monitor VDI change with freq changes. Junk items tend not to respond to freq change as say good targets like coins. In real trashy areas, tot lots, areas where you are trying to limit your digging the normalized setting might help, but remember deus at depth usually gives high VDI or no VDI at all.

Agree with tnsharpshooter...freg changing is the ultimate bottlecap tester.

Agree with freq change benefits. I thought ID Norm = Yes just normalized the VDI numbers from all freqs to the 18kHz numbers. In other words, even though the freqs are changed the VDI numbers remain the same as when using 18kHz freq. At least that's what I got from my study of the manual and Andy's book...Is that not correct?

That's how it's supposed to work; I've never used it though.

I wished for ID norm before it was in the upgrade, now I never use it.
When you get proficient, you might find yourself switching ID norm off.

I keep it off. I don't want the effect. I mainly hunt in 18khz for the area I live due to high concentrations of iron. So far no issues but I have to get the detector out some more for sure.
