ID or no ID

I like the ID feature because it's another indicator, like tone, which if you know your machine, will help you as far as constancy... not to be trusted as gospel but a good additional tool.

I own both type machines, and as already discussed...... both have their merits. It is just what you get used to using........ what machine that you stick with and really learn. I don't think I can explain it, but with a strickly Tone ID machine....... your ears will learn to distinguish the small variations in the signal tones that will help you decide whether you wish to dig or not........ especially when combined with a discrimination reading. My Shadow X-5 has a toggle switch to check out a slightly higher discrimination that where I have it tuned to.

The Visual ID just provides (IMO) just another tool to use in conjunction with the tones. Right now, I'm trying to learn the Fisher F75 I bought a couple of months ago. It is overloading my sensory capacity at this time with so much information. I'll get the hang of it though! I love the challenge of the learning curve!

I want to thank everyone for chimein in here , this question came to me an got me thinking just like it did you guys. Myself I agree alot with what everyone said , I prefer my turn on set an go machine an when I use my ID machine I can rarely see the ID screen anyways so I mostly just go by ear , tho I will admit I do look at times at the depth or to see if what it tells me is wreally what I dig ...

I've never met a Mexican who spoke real Spanish. The speak Mexican as far as I can tell. It's much like the difference in English here and in the UK. They are very similar but not the same. Now back to the subject: I have both types of detectors and I don't pay as much attention to the ID feature as I use to. It's wrong too much! I now have a Minelab and before that a Garrett. The Garrett was more accurate in predicting what the find would be, mainly because it told you the size of the target. I learned to jockey the discrimination knob on my Tesoreo non-ID machine so that I can fairly accurately figure out what I've got under my coil. The thing I miss most is the depth meter on the Tesoro. It could be an inch or it could be 10 inches. The only clue is that it pinpoints louder if it is shallow. But a large target will be loud too, so maybe not? Anyway that's my take. Monty

6 months into my first ID machine and I am surprised by how much it has changed the way I hunt. I prefer to run it with zero dicrimination. I use the two tone setting for "buzzing" out the iron. Just a quick look at the number, measure the depth(I dig everythin over 3") and wow, I am much more efficient with my time. My favorite thing about the ID is my ability to pass up the crappy zinc pennies. I guess this makes me a cherrypicker now but my quality finds have increased enormously. I used to scuff at the need for ID but now I am a believer.
