Re: Identifying Old American & French & English Dug Coins

Welcome Dan! It never hurts to have an expert lurking the forum to help out with IDs. Nice coins too! .....but isn't a "Black Dog" Sous Marques/2 Sous etc. and not the 1640 French Douzain? (coin 4) (noting your file names)

Dan:
Welcome aboard; no doubt your expertise will expedite ID-ing many TN finds.
Is your 1722 French Colonies coin related to John Law's "Compagnie d' Occident"?
Don.....

I think it's these you're looking for.

IP,
Yes, that's certainly of the vintage; thanks.

Most are fairly common (book value anyway) with the exception of a few mints. I have never seen one posted.

I can't seem to find the reference but I believe the "black dogg" moniker was first given to the counterstamped douzains of 1640 and carried over to the later sous marques and other billon coins. I was quite into the French colonials for some time, I'll have to get my Vlack reference out and brush up!

I have the Vlack, but didn't bother to grab it.

Maybe the term was carried over but I don't recall reading that, and the Black Doggs section is at the back of the book and consists of the Sous Marque, Stampee & 2 Sous.

Re: Identifying Old American & French & English Dug Coins

1720 French John Law Mississippi Bubble Coins:
The copper Sols are more common than the 20 sols Silver with the two L's.
I have one pc of the Silver coin.
1721 and 1722 French Colonies (inscribed on the coins) are goodies, hard to find...I have salted away a few
I have over a dozen references for French Colonial coins, and the same for English Colonials
Bob Vlack's book is very good, but lacking in areas like the 1640 billon silver coins countermarked with the FDL Fleur de Lys and stampees and the Caribbean Island countermarked coins.

I have Counterstamped Caribbean coins from Cuba, Trinidad, Tobago, Saint Kitts, Saint Eustacius, etc

I make a buy/sell wholesale market in most Colonial coins.

I buy coins from the Americas and Europe...and you would be surprised what shows up in Australia and New Zealand

The Northeast US is very fertile ground, pun intended, for dug coins. Also the Canadian Maritime Provinces.

Always happy to help.
