Hi all, my dump bank has a lot of ike(large dollar coins) on hand. I am considering buying the $200+ they have to see if I can find anything decant. The thing is, my dump bank cherry picks... the tellers tell me what they find, and I *sometimes* tell them what I find(the occasional 40%er, a silver dime, etc), they know about 40% halves.

Tomorrow I am making a visit to the bank and will ask to buy them. Do you think it is okay for me to look through them and return them back to the same bank? Thanks all for any helpful responses. Also, I am dumping the following ikes:

2x 1971
2x 1972
2x 1972d
1x 1974
1x 1974d
4x 1776-1976
2x 1776-1976d
3x 1977d

should I consider dumping those or are they worth more than $1? any known valueable vareities/errors?

Thanks, HH!

You could try throwing the lot on the Bay. I sold $120 worth last week, after E-Bay/Paypal fees, realized about a 12% profit. Nothing huge, but seemed to be the best option.

I spend them. It's great to see the faces people make when you hand them to them.

I have an ebay account, use it to buy things. I am not familliar with eBay fees. can someone explain the fees to me quick and simple? Thanks!!! :)

I see how it is fun to spend them. I am on a budget of $1,600(enough for 3 boxes of halves, and a box of nickels or something)... if I am going to spend them, I want back dollar bills since this will be coming out of my $1,600 budget. By the way, like your avatar picture NeaninNH!

Listing the item is now free (up to 100 month). They charge a fee based off of the selling price, which is currently 9.0%. If you are a top rated seller, you get a 20% discount. Paypal fees will run about 3.0% (which breaks down to $0.30 + 2.9% of the transaction). Total fees will run you about 12-13% of final purchae price. This was the breakdown the last I checked.

So I would have to sell for at lease $226 w/o shipping to break even if I were to sell 200 ikes. Thanks for the info!!

I bought about 200 or so from a bank several months ago after seeing that they were selling on ebay for over face -sometimes rather significantly. Most were 1976 in fairly nice condition. I picked out the 1976 Type 1 (Mintage: 4,019,000) and tried to sell the others on Craigslist for a small profit but had no luck so I wound up just dumping them at my bank (I kept the Type 1's).

I still buy them whenever they are available just for the remote chance I might find an S (clad or silver) plus I don't want to pass up the chance of possibly finding a Peace or Morgan. I bought about another 2 dozen or so just this week - but all clad Ike's. And it's sometimes fun to spend them and see people's reactions - even better when I give a clerk a small hand full of Ike's and halves - then they really get confused.

You might want to check the '76's you have for Type 1's. You can notice them rather easily if you know what to look for. They have a flatter broader lettering on reverse compared to the more common Type 2's. I believe the Type 1's are the coins that were actually minted in 1975. I save them for the sort of the same reason I save the NIFC halves - the low mintage.

Thank you SilverFace! :icon_pirat:

The clad Ike that you want to find is the 1972, type 2.

And if you do decide to buy the Ike's you might consider selling them on Craigslist - you may have better luck then I did. It would probably be harder to sell them on Craigslist than ebay but at least you wouldn't have to pay any fees if you do. Just a thought. And worst case you could always just dump them - maybe at another bank.

I still keep thinking about that score I got a few months ago when I was at my favorite bank to check for halves and the teller checked and said no halves but one of the other drive thru tellers (she's become my lucky teller over the past 2 years) said she had some silver dollars so I reluctantly said I'd take 'em figuring - oh well, just more clad Ike's again. What I actually got was 4 Morgan dollars - including a low mintage 1899 worth at least $130. Sorry I keep mentioning that score - I just can't seem to let that one go. I just never thought I would be able to find actual SILVER dollars in circulation in the year 2011 - including a low mintage one which is actually the best/most valuable Morgan dollar I own. And I keep thinking of it when the subject of hunting for dollar coins comes up.

Anyway, good luck and HH!

don't dump them at the same bank, I never do. To me it's just not cool. But you can find some errors in Ikes. the 72 ikes had a couple errors, and the 76 ikes have 2 different prints on them. Ont of the 72 ike errors can be worth over $100, the other error is worth around $40. Other than that Ikes are worth a bit over a dollar.

If you sell them on eBay that is. Find out how much a USPS flat rate box is that will fit them all in and charge that as the shipping fee.

you keep bringing up the morgan dollar score, no issue to me, I actually like when people post their finds on my posts, give me hope on what is still out there! congrats on your morgan dollar score, I do not recall reading your post on that. Last year I made a bank stop and got 2 peace dollars from 1923, they were: 1923d and 1923s

can someone explain to me the valueable/less valueable 1972 ike errors? I have several 1972 ike's. Thanks! (is it for philly ikes(no mintmark) or denver ikes(d mintmark) or both?

I only discovered this website a couple of weeks ago so I didn't post that score at the time - but I have mentioned that score a couple of times on other posts recently about dollar coins or favorite scores or something. And that same drive thru teller is the same teller I scored an entire cwr of Franklins ('59-'63) - and it was the only roll she had at the time - just about 2 years ago which really got me interested in CRHing on a more regular basis. And I got a nice batch of about 10 buffaloes (all with dates) and 2 or 3 silver from just $40 or $50 in nic's I bought from her just a month ago. So like I said she is sort of my favorite teller.

And good job with those Peace dollars you scored - just goes to show even REAL SILVER dollars are out there just waiting to be found.

Good luck and HH!

If you dump them back at your bank, you are telling the tellers "Please don't ever save these for me ever again."

I'd buy them all, and dump them at another bank if need be. find a little local bank...I bet they will be happy to get them.

Please don't dump where you eat.

I too feel the need to keep them for some reason. I guess it's just their clunky appearance!

The other day I dumped those ikes at another branch of the same bank. since coin counters do not take them in my area, had to give them to the teller over the counter.

I am visiting the usual branch later and I am thinking of purchasing the $200+ ikes they have on hand, (if they still have them), search through them and return those ikes to another branch of the same bank in another location, that's a good idea?

The tellers cherry pick, though they may not know about 40% ikes... or proofs.

Any clue on how the tellers would hand over the coins to me? in a canvas bag? in $20 rolls? in bank envalopes?

Thanks, and I will not dump where I eat, at least with ikes.

With denominations like pennies nickels dimes and quarters, I dump them into the coin machine after searching through them, and when cashing in the ticket voucher ask for boxes of coins, no issue at all, I let them know I collect coins. best staff a bank could have :hello2:
