Hi all, my dump bank has a lot of ike(large dollar coins) on hand. I am considering buying the $200+ they have to see if I can find anything decant. The thing is, my dump bank cherry picks... the tellers tell me what they find, and I *sometimes* tell them what I find(the occasional 40%er, a silver dime, etc), they know about 40% halves.

Tomorrow I am making a visit to the bank and will ask to buy them. Do you think it is okay for me to look through them and return them back to the same bank? Thanks all for any helpful responses. Also, I am dumping the following ikes:

2x 1971
2x 1972
2x 1972d
1x 1974
1x 1974d
4x 1776-1976
2x 1776-1976d
3x 1977d

should I consider dumping those or are they worth more than $1? any known valueable vareities/errors?

Thanks, HH!

can someone explain to me the valueable/less valueable 1972 ike errors? I have several 1972 ike's. Thanks! (is it for philly ikes(no mintmark) or denver ikes(d mintmark) or both?

It comes down to knowing geography. On the reverse, focus on the Earth in the upper left. You want a Type 2 - King of Ikes. Type 1 will have Cuba, Jamaica and Domincan Republic in the Atlantic. Also, the west coast of the America's will be poorly defined. Type 3, the coasts are defined and the islands are moved to the west underneath the peninsula. Type 2 is actully a proof die. The islands will appear to be missing and the peninsula is soft in definition.

Wow, did not even realize this until you told me, thank you so much for the help! I am purchasing all of the ikes at the bank later, will check that out. Hopefully the 1972's will be in decant shape. :icon_sunny:

"Any clue on how the tellers would hand over the coins to me? in a canvas bag? in $20 rolls? in bank envalopes?"

When I got those 200 or so Ike's I bought a while back they teller just had them in an extra coin box (may have been quarters) - so that might be the same in this case too.

Good luck & HH

Although no one said it, I will. They are not errors. Errors are mistakes. these coins are what are called varieties.

Good catch, Enamel7. I was more focused on providing the indicators of the varieties and didn't catch the "error".

went to the bank, no luck, they got rid of the ikes, had 5 on hand, my teller had 1 and 2 other tellers quickly chimed in letting me know they wanted to get rid of theirs. 4 bi-centennials and a 1972, no luck on the 72 though.

enamel 7 are you a frekin grammar teacher!

hes right. its like saying "i found a morgan quarter today!!!!!" it just completely doesnt make sense. so, being the error expert that he is, he corrected the post so it could educate everyone on this forum. i see nothing wrong with this. in fact that was VERY nice of him to take the time to correct that to further everyones knowledge of coins. thanks Enamel, that was a good tid-bit of info, that was something i didnt know. ~Enamel, keep it up and hh! I have noticed that in the past as well. It seems amazing that circulated clad Ike's can sell for around 2 x face or more. Even with all the selling fees the seller should be able to make a profit if they got them at face. I currently have about a couple of dozen - mostly ones I've gotten in the past few weeks hoping to score some keepers (as well as about 4 '76 T 1's that I've had for a while). I usually just spend them a few at a time (I like to see other people''s reactions) or just dump them @ another bank.

I had about 200 or so mostly nice looking '76's over a year ago that I got at a bank and I tried selling them on Craigslist for a small $10 profit but didn't have any luck so I just dumped them sometime later @ another bank. But selling some on Ebay might be worth considering in the future.

It's also amazing that a $10 bank roll of halves wil sell for $30-$40 on eBay, but it happens.

Ikes, 1976 halves, 1940 nickels, NIFC halves, these can be sold on ebay or criagslist for a small profit. I would say it is not worth the effort. I just started but the fees and the effort take away form CRHing. Any coin that you don't think is worth enough to keep, dump. Finding silver and or collectable coins is a more valueable way to spend one's time. In my opinion :dontknow:

Ikes sell for $2.00-$2.40 on Ebay. Still doubling your money after fees. Small profit for one. Anytime you can double your money though is no small profit.
