Today was my first Day out using the cibola. all day I'm so confused i turn up my discrimination(I tried all positions before ) to max to try to avoid pull tabs and cans all freak in Day i still hit em.. i still don't understand how to know what i find the Manuel tells how to set it up. but what noise... all day i swing left to right then i hear A beep and i use the pinpointer and t makes a deeper beep and bam a can or a axel seal .. other times it beeps and i use pinpointer and it makes a solid beep but same noise as searching and nothing is there. I'm so confused i feel i may need to send it back and get a diffrent one... >:( :'(

Something is wrong if you can turn the disc all the way to the right and still pick up much. I can turn the disc all the way to the right on my two Tesoro's and have a hard time picking up a dime unless it is almost touching the coil. They lose a lot of depth if you max out the disc and there isn't any reason to do that. The DISC just below tab or zinc and you still get great depth without losing seperation ability.

With the disc all the way up you shouldn't find much at all. Where did you set the threshold at??? And I never use the pinpoint button, when you "x" the target its almost always dead center in the coil. Let me know if I can help...

Greg

i set the threshold to a slight hum at about 1 oclock. when i use the detector though everytime i get a hit and i dig nothing therei go over again and the target be to the right then left then ill dig about a foot still nothing. but it pick big cans great

Something doesn't seem right there. I've been looking at the Vaquero for some time now and I think with the manual ground balance on it, it might be easier to set disc. and sensitivity. That's just my opinion. It just looks like a real winner to me and for the price, I think you can''t go wrong. Call Tesoro up and ask them what they think. Hope it all works out for you.

I have the V. With the disc. turned to max you will pick up large condusive objects like crushed cans, can lids etc... To defeat this flaw I turn down my sensitivity. Run it at 6 or 7 and the aforementioned signals will be "scratchy" in sound, then you know not to dig. At 6-7 and you get a good crisp signal from all directions I would dig. You need to lift your coil still. If your coil is 5-6 inches off the ground and you are still hearing that crisp clear signal, move on. This means your target is probably shallow and not old.

What kind of ground are you hunting?

I use a Cibola and it only does that kind of stuff if I'm hunting wet, salt sand on a beach.

As for detecting a can or an axle seal...most detectors will pick up big junk like that.

On my Cibola just about every aluminum tab that exists disappears when I set the discrim to the 'tab' position.

Have you tried air-testing targets, including tabs, while adjusting the the discrim? If not you should try that. If you can't discrim out a tab, for instance, while air-testing then I would suspect there's something wrong with the machine.

OK i live in Michigan so there is no salt water.i have tried air testing just unfortunately i never had a can.. this morning I'm going to redo all air test and go out to a diffrent place. if i have the same problem, Ill call tesoro or ill have a new coat rack that says tesoro. Oh i had sensitivity to 3 or 4

Somethings not right, you should run the sens up till it gets erratic and back off a bit. I think mine usually at 7-8. Threshold sounds right about 1 o'clock. Were you in a real trashy area maybe??? Trying a different spot with different settings might be a good idea. Also make sure your coil connection is clean and tight and the cable is wrapped snugly away from the coil. The Cibola is very sensitive and an awesome machine to use.
Good luck, hope its nothing serious.

It is possible that a wire could be loose on your discrimination control. It happened to my CZ5. But getting back to the Cibola, I have one and it is a great machine. If there is nothing wrong with the machine pick up the 5.75 inch coil. It pinpoints so much better than with the stock coil. Perhaps you need more time to spend with your machine to get use to what's its telling you. Good luck.

This is amazing, i went out yesturday and i went to a park. a guy there was from prescott arizonia and showed a few things about the metal detector. i learn a few thigs he showed me how to set it a little better and even took me around the park to show me how it works.. thats weird since im in michigan and frustrated and meet a guy who does this hobby and is from arizona... all i can say is thank god

Perhaps when you are "not seeing" what it detected its a small peice of foil? I have that alot, my Deleon is very very senitive and will pick up a small peice of foil way down! Good luck, keep at it.

Its great to hear that you got a little help. I think that you will be very happy with your Tesoro, sometimes you just need a little back up

Good luck on your hunting and be sure to post your finds!

Someone posted a simular picture one time. Is it maybe melted aluminum? Like from someone throwing a can in a fire? ???

One hell of a can its really heavy for a can and to light for lead, but ill get a few dollars for it

I agree. With Max Disc. I only get quarters on my uMax--no pennies or dimes unless the dime is quite shallow.

Thanks everyone for helping me. This is why i like this web site people here are good helpers. I have learned a lot in the past few weeks and i hope ill learn more and maybe find a few things.. and I'm glad my cibola is not a new expensive coat rack

Planet1,
Sounds like you're new to detecting. I learned with a unit that had VDI, that is a target readout. These help beginners a lot. But you soon realize that they are not all that accurate and just ID the obvious stuff. I recenlty purchased a Vaquero, so now its just the controls and my brain, which I prefer any day. Our ground is still frozen here in Isabella county for the most part, except the south sloping grass, so I still have limited experience on it. I have been trying to learn this unit, and it is different. I have scoured my yard over the last 2 years, yet I took the Vaq out and my first dig was a 77 penney. I was like - "how did I miss this before?" It was proably masked, and chimed as zinc/tab so I didn't dig.
Anyhow, I have a past post bookmarked that I use as a general guide for using this thing in the real world. And being somewhat experienced, when I read it I knew it was legitimate. I've studied this post, and so far I run just like this guy does. In his post he is using the Vaquero, but all the same settings would all apply. Not sure if he even mentions ground balance. Run your machine like this guy does and see how it turns out for you. Try it and see.

Or else just go way down the page, and it's titled something like Schoolyard King.
