Detector(s) used
Garrett GTP 1350, Tesoro Cutlass II uMax
I'm going to try a Tesoro????

I'm a Garrett user and have an old Garrett Freedom Ace (beep and dig) that I use as a backup
detector that I think I'm going to quit using. I intend to replace it with a Tesoro Cutlass II uMax.
These are both very similar but I think the Cutlass II uMax will give me a little better depth and
faster reaction/recovery time than the Freedom Ace. This is my question since I'm new to Tesoro:

---If I want to replace the standard 8" brown donut coil with a larger coil for greater depth, can I just
replace the coil out in the field on the fly or does it really need to be sent back to Tesoro to
be 'tuned in' for a different size coil? (are they tuning it with the preset GB????)

---If it is O.K. to just switch coils on the fly, will all uMax coils fit on all uMax detectors (Silver uMax
compatible with Cutlass II uMax). I looks like to me some others in this Tesoro forum are saying that
this is O.K. but it looks like the detectors run at different kHz frequencies to me.

Please help me out as I am really looking forward to trying out a Tesoro detector as a replacement.
Thanks

All coils that are designed to use with each model are noted in the catalog. You can change all the Umax coils in the field if they are also designed for your model. The tuning is best done with models that have manual ground balance as they are a might hotter which also means less room for error in quality of components.

Everything Sandman said is correct. Just make sure you buy the coil that goes with your kind of unit.

If you are going with a better coil to get better depth, he is also right about ground balancing.

I will only suggest the Vaquero as that is the least expensive model with the ground balance feature and gets good depth even with the stock coil.
