I'm Having "Pin Pointing problems"

>:( When I find a good "Beep", I swing the coil over the area as close as I hear the Beep.I have a Bounty hunter(not the most savy).I try to swing slow, and cover the area, but the two coils confuss me.Does the outer coil first pick up the signal??? or is it between the outer coil and the smaller inner coil???Sometimes I have dug a hole where I thought the Beep was and end up digging a much bigger "plug" that only holds a coin.Any thoughts will help me. Thanks Idig

Does your detector have an all metal mode where insted of giving a beep when you swing the coil over the target, it gives a continuous signal that changes as you approach and go past the target?

Re: I'm Having "Pin Pointing problems"

I'm not familiar with how well a BH is at pinpointing, but does your MD give you a depth reading that is accurate at shallow depths? If target is shallow you could probe 1st, before digging.

I REALLY advise a probe that will NOT scratch targets...

I have mangled SO MANY targets with a screw driver or awl that it would be embarrassing!

Just do a criss cross with your coil X marks the spot.

Now... if The item is sitting straight up and not flat in the ground you may get a signal on both side of the coin or object and not the item itself. ;)

Wherever it is, it should be consistant. Tape a coin to the bottom of a piece of card board and mark the top side with a marker right above the coin. Scan it and you can see exactly where it pinpoints. Use a nickel, dime and quarter.

Hey, thanks for the info. My detector does't have a depth meter, but I'll practice the X cross on target, and the cardboard test. Thanks again Idig ;D

Re: I'm Having "Pin Pointing problems"

I have a BH 505. These metal detectors have concentric coils. That means the Hot spot on the coil is dead center. The best way to narrow down the target spot is to do what was suggested above. The "X" method. Swing the coil over the target and concentrate on the center of the coil crossing the target. You should get the best response from the detector when the center of the coil is directly over the target. When you get a strong repeating signal in one direction shorten and slow your swings down until the signal is repeating rapidly like beep (one second) beep. You will notice the beep happens right as the center of the coil passes over. Once you have this turn 90 degrees and sweep the target from that direction using the same method. Right in the center of your cross is the target. If you have a small coil try using it. It makes narrowing the target down much easier. One other little tip about the BH is corroded pennies seem to throw it off at little bit. That is about the only time I miss the target when "X-ing" it. Everything else is usually dead on. Another good way to practice the "X" method is to put a coin on top of the ground and "X" it. Watch the center of the coil passing over it and listen to the machine when it does. Good Luck and Happy Hunting! :)

Re: I'm Having "Pin Pointing problems"

If your machine has tone ID in Disc or Auto Notch find the spot where the signal is the same on the left to right axis and forward to back axis of your X. My Discovery sometimes will give one tone, such as silver on a left to right pass and then a nickel tone on the up and back pass, so I move the axis one way or another until I get the same tone both ways and the target will be in the center of the coil. It will sometimes be hard to pinpoint on surface targets.
