Hi TORRERO,

I believe what you have is an antique bronze reducing pipe fitting connector.

Possibly used for plumbing, hot water heaters and sometimes wine barrels.

Where did you locate this?

Regards!

In a farmers field in Spain, but there is no indication that its some kind of water pipe, it looks almost identical to a smoking pipe. I've dug lots of brass pipe fittings and this is not one of them.

I doubt it's a plumbing fitting. I worked as a plumber for many years and worked in homes from the 1700s on up to new construction and never saw one of those. I do think it's some sort of fitting though as it has a place to secure it to something. no need for a screw hole on a smoking pipe.

I think that is the BIG question, what is that thing on the bottom for ? Although the older clay pipes had a stub on the bottom, to rest it on something while you smoked it, could it have been made like that so they could keep the PIPE in one place while doing other things ? Maybe like if you are sitting at your desk and you have your pipe clamped to something then all you have to do is move your head over and draw a puff.. ? Who the F knows ?
Its design is clearly a smoking pipe though, if you held it in your hand you can clearly see that's what it is..
I'm just looking for any history I can find... Until I dug it, I never would have thought they made them out of brass,
Maybe it was used for advertising someone who sold PIPES ? and they had it mounted so people could see what they sold ? :dontknow: Maybe it could have been made for a handicapped person who couldn't hold it in their hands ?
This is the beast of Metal Detecting, because although it is a piece of history, you can't go back and see personally that history....

That is the closeset thing to mine I have seen, INCREDIBLE !!
These are other pipes with appendages that look similar to mine, its possible they used that loop to hang around the neck, or something until needed ? Its hard to determine exactly why something is the way it is, without actually being there ..

Your pipe is a pretty cool find, pretty crude, definitely an old one as well.
Reference to the loop on the Otto pipe:
A very interesting artifact from Ottoman Turkey
A small pipe head made of cast brass
It has been dug out and recovered intact
Well decorated and interesting form with a loop to be carried on a string
Circa late 1700's/early 1800's
