Hello and welcome.

Welcome to T.Net from Virginia!!

Hey Hey Cohoon! Funny to this day I still have people refering to Morgantown as Morgantown, Va. They must have failed history and geography classes. :laughing7:

Hahahaha! That is too funny! I can't say too much though, I am originally from coastal NC.

Imperial Orange Gilt was a term used for the gold plating in the late 1700s to the late 1800s.

Great find and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the info! So, from what your telling me it probably had a plating of gold or gold looking material that has obviously deteriorated away. Any way to disseminate what type of clothing it may have been attached to? I know that question is a stretch.

I'm not a button expert. I did a google search and found a lot of references to imperial orange gilt buttons. If there are any other marks on it or a photo of the shank on the back, that might help others identify it.

Post front and back pictures in the Relic forum, I bet you will get some answers.

You might consider browsing Sub-Forums: West Virginia for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.

Great find!

Does that say France on the bottom?

Digger - I will peruse Sub-Forums: West Virginia per your recommendation. thx!

Small - The only words I see is Imperial Orange. Nothing else is visible. From you asking, I assume that if it did say "France" that would make it much more appealing.
