I am not a happy camper right now. I just sold a metal detector and was told that there is now a 21 day hold on funds for these types of detectors on eBay due to their new "buyer protection" policy.

If the buyer leaves positive feedback or three days after delivery confirmation the, funds will be released if there are no disputes. I think this is great from a buyers point of view, but this leaves a window of opportunity for certain people. When you are dealing with a sophisticated instrument, it is easy for a person who has never used a metal detector to claim that it is not working properly.

I still think Pay Pal is the safest way to deal, but I will look at other alternatives.

Pretty simple, never bid more than you're willing to pay and you won't have a problem.

Well said! I bid on an older topo map on disk for my GPS for $10. Only one other bid came through, but I wasn't taking the bait. A day later that bid was retracted an I was the solo bidder and won the item for $10. I suspect that the other bid was just to try to bait me, but I held my ground!

For most things it's really not much to worry about, but I have bid over a grand on a few things here and there, and they were the type of things that there's really not much of a guideline of what it's worth. In those cases i was on pins and needles hoping to get a great deal, but knowing another high bid whether legit or a shill was going to cost me a lot.
