Indian Artifact or fossil in the making?

Found this on the edge of the river and plucked it out of the water. It is definitely bone. I can see porous material that may or may not be visible in the pictures. What's interesting is the scrape marks which are not very deep and the orangey discoloration that can be seen by the scraping. It would not do much if any tumbling in the river.

Any ideas?

Wow... Are you sure it's not shell? Can you post close up photos Of the edge of the wider end.
 
These are 2 shell Celts I found in our area. It looks to me like you just happened to pluck an exceptional artifact from the river. please email me.. also those marks you referred to as scratches we're more likely from cordage binding that to a handle

www.aboriginalantiquties.com. use that link to look at shell Celts from our area. I belive yours is conch shell. I could be wrong but I don't think I am so... congratulations!!!!!!

OMG so is IS great news!!! This is cool!!! It is nearly 5 inches long 1 and 3/4 at its widest part and 1 inch and less as you near the point!! I looked at that web site.
 
Big Congrats on your very first artifact!!! Besides some pottery chards.

Yep I can see how they wrapped it. I inserted the pic upright so all the markings can be seen.
 
You should put a ruler next to it cuz that one is big...
