Man that 1859 Indian Head with the counterstamp is just a Terrific find! I don't think I can recall but maybe one other time in all my years of digging of seeing an Indian Head that was Counterstamped and what an awesome stamp it is! Congratulations and I would've been VERY happy with that find

That is a very cool Indian head that your partner dug. The thing with the E is not a button. What it is, I'm not sure, but I dug two of them while I was in Virginia and neither one had evidence of a shank attachment, exactly like yours. The two I dug were at one site, also in VA beach.
