Hello friends, I'm trying to disassemble this detector that I bought at a garage sale, as I'm going on a trip. It is suppossed to be an easy disassembly (according to youtube vids), but it has become a nightmare. I'm mechanically NOT inclined, and I cannot get the top cam lock to release. I turn right, nothing, I turn left nothing. I know righty tighty lefty loosy, but it's not working! I wanted to ask for your help, as I'm about to set fire on the detector.....and possibly myself! Thanks to all. I appreciate it.

Get a pair of channel lock pliers.
Wrap a old cloth over the threaded part.
This is to prevent scoring the plastic.

Then just turn the cam lock off.

Thank you very much, just to confirm, counter clockwise? 8-)

It all depends on how you're holding it I guess.
I would guess from the coil end looking at the control box it would be counter clockwise.
FYI
I have never owned a Garrett product, so I'm going on instinct here.

Sounds like it has never been cleaned and the sand has it locked up..

Might try some pentrating oil, apply it several times as it sits. Afterwards tap on cam lightly they use channel locks, could take some time to free up.

I think these only turn a half turn, so if you can turn it a half turn to the left I’m thinking it’s unlocked. Then there is the push button below it which has to be ALL THE WAY IN to turn that lower shaft.
If it hasn’t moved for years it’s probably rusted up, WD40 or something might help, if you use Chanel locks to turn and turn it you will break the locking mechanism…
I think if you turn it to the left, a half turn, push the button all the way in, then clamp onto the top pole and bottom pole and twist… enough force should turn the bottom loose from the top…
Good luck
