i've got a 5 gal. bucket of fossils, some whole, unopened, many ferns from around coal city il. these things are all over the place. private club property i belong to. is there a better way to open these besides whacking them with a hammer? happy new year to all.

If you're in Central Illinois, fill the bucket of concretions with water and leave them outside all winter. In the spring, some of them will have split on their own.

For those that haven't split . . . well, there's the winter of 2010-11!

im sure plastic bucket will crack open after freezing solid. so let freezing water split them instead of hammer, it may take another million years of freezing -thawing for some to open. thanks.
