This token is in rough shape, I found it in street construction. It says Dan Matheson White Cloud, M. good for 5 cents in trade. Back is blank. Any info on the type of business ar timeframe used is appreciated. Thanks. Dan

Hey there Dan,

I found a Daniel 'Mathenson', age 31 born in Nova Scotia, in the 1880 Census at White Cloud, Newaygo County, Michigan. He was a clerk in James McLeod's saloon. Perhaps he bought the saloon >1880 from McLeod.

Spelling errors were rife in these censuses.

Hope this helps. - LG.

sounds likely. Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. HH Dan

i have nothing other than to say it is a nice old token. i would date it late 1800 early 1900.

Thanks Likely Guy. That's even better!! Dan

Found a photo from White Cloud in the Newaygo County Historical Archives, as you can see by the caption it says "Mathews Saloon" (unfortunately no date) but I suspect that it's the same place.

Don't know much about it but it sure is nice. Incuse tokens are usually from the 1800's. Can you post a picture with it cleaned up a bit

Daniel Matheson is listed in the state gazetteers as a saloon in White Cloud from 1885-1903.

This piece is previously unknown to me. Can you give me the size in millimeters?
