Ink wells

I have an old inkwell that I found in a house that my father and I tore down years ago. It's either a very thick glass or porcilain (prob. not spelled right) I think, and says U.S. Navy on the base. It's color is jet black and it still has the pen with it. Does anyone have any info as to when the Navy stopped using inkwells? There is no date on it or anything. I'll try to post pictures as soon as I can get the camera functioning.
