Found this late 1840's-early 1850's Daguerreotype today and learned it wasn't uncommon for people to write messages inside the cases. I delicately removed the copper and glass plate and under it I found an inscription! First to see it in perhaps 165 years! Doesn't appear to be English. Any ideas what it translates to? So far I have "L da Cealkins Mindita", but not sure if this is right.

I don't know, but I read it as Ida Calkins. Just a guess.

Lots of old, interesting looking hits on Google for Ida Calkins. :icon_thumleft:

Ida Calkins Mendera. Note how the small "i" in Calkins has a spread apart base, so I think those are "e's" in Mendera. It is a last name. That's my highly uneducated guess! Congrats on a very cool find. Sub 8-)
