After the Japanese victory over the Russians in 1905, Japan began its eventual occupation of and "unification" of Korea. Initially, and until Japanese coinage became the standard on the peninsula, both the Korean chon/won and the Japanese sen/yen were produced at the Osaka mint. The Korean coins were patterned on contemporary Japanese coins and even used the same planchets. Both "won" and "yen" (as well as the Chinese "yuan") are cognates for "round". These two coins are both silver (.800) and about 30 mm, and date to 1905/06.
