Found this at an old homesite in the woods (very remote). Nothing really remains, but some bricks and some old trees. Not really sure what it is. Was about 4" deep. I'm thinking it is some kind of military badge or button. I believe it is bronze (pretty heavy). Any idea of when this was from or what this is? Trying to get an idea of the age of the place I'm hunting. BTW, the back was flat except for two corroded bumps at each end (maybe where a pin went).

It's a Bridle Rosette. And it is Military. Can I see a photo of the back?

BB, thanks didn't even consider that. I figured someone on here would know what it was. I took a picture of the back, but it doesn't really show anything. Any idea how old this is?

Is it lead-filled on the back? Looks like 2 iron attachments still there...

BB, I believe it is lead filled. The first thing I noticed when I picked it up was the shear weight. What you see at the top and bottom are most likely 2 iron attachments.

I think this one could be CW era. I'll look through my resources this afternoon and get back to you as soon as I can swing by the house.

I do think this one is Civil War Era--1860-1880 or so. And it is a rosette. It should measure 1 3/4 inches in diameter.

Nice find!

BB, thanks a lot. It is 1 3/4" in diameter. I wasn't really sure what I had. I was hoping to use this piece to date the old homesite. I think I found where a well was. I didn't get to hunt there long. I was hitting a lot of iron targets, but maybe I'll have to dig more of them next time.

GOOD JOB

CIVIL WAR ERA ROSETTE MOST LIKELY YOUR ON TO A HOT SPOT
COULD BE MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM.

KEEP ON DIGGIN
