Interesting Rock

I found this interesting rock in some creek gravel I was looking through. The striking color variation caught my attention, but I was also curious if this could not be some sort of artifact? I noticed how worn down the upper part of the lighter section is, and its much smoother than the rest of it.

Any thought about if it might have been something would be appreciated, but I'd also like to know what kind of rock/material it is and what causes the stark color variation.

Found this on our property in northwest Arkansas.
