Yesterday (18th) was my birthday and I took the whole day off to detect. Was up in the hills in an area that was used buy the army to train troops in the 40s and 50s. Was hoping to find a bit of dropped silver (no such luck). Was following a dirt bike trail and saw an old rusty tin can along side the trail and what looked like glass inside it. It turned out to be a small Mason jar with paper inside it.

The note inside the Jar reads:
"This rock mound and post marks the South westerly corner of Ore Bag mining claim. Line runs Easterly 600 Ft and Northerly 1500 ft from this point.
Charles L Seely
George Miller"

The jar has a glass top with a zinc lid. And must predate the military period. Will be giving it to the Historcal Museum next week.

There is nothing worth mining in those hills, so not sure what they were after.

This absolutely not an active claim. I do plan on returning a copy in another jar to the site and will get pics of the area.

I'd recommend you checking with the STATE and seeing if this is a current claim or if it's expired. They would have an location of the claim on a map for reference.

I think if it's current " It's not the right thing to do" I don't know if it's illegal to remove, but it doesn't help the mine owner if the claim is "current"
If it's expired, then checking with the STATE with give you lots of good information, "usually"

Happy belated birthday. THat is a very interesting find. Pretty cool really.

Congratulations,

Rev

That is a Very cool find! Keep us informed .

I agree also, they had to be looking for something, to have staked a claim. I also agree with the part about checking with the state. Then if you found out what they were looking for. Then of course you could tell us. Way to go though, great find.
Mike

Any chance that the name might be Charles E. Seely? A man by that name died in Huntington, CA in 1926. You can find more info about him at familysearch.org

One more thing:
