Intro. of a nubie that's been down & around

Hi all, I'm new to your forum ,I have been reading your post for the past 3 or 4 months now . First I like to complement a lot of you on your knowledge and willingness to help others . And for you new to this "field" , it appears to be an incredible resource for you [and me] .
I started out over 30 yrs. ago in central Australia . As a boy ,I can say I was fascinated by the Aboriginal culture . In school [thanks Mr. Shay] I was selected to spend some time in art & humanities classes with my Aboriginal class mates , I hope thay got something out of this cultural exchange . Also my family and I were befriended by the Chalmers family ,thay had a "few" cattle stations [ranches]. The Chalmers always [since first contact in 1919 ] had good relations with the native peoples . This relationship , provided me with a great resource to buy artifacts [spears ,boomerangs ,axe's ,etc..] to order ,not that tourist crap ! Also, it's in this time period [70's] that I started surface collecting stone artifacts to add to my collection .
In 1977 we moved back to the U.S. I stayed with my grandparent's in N.W. Iowa, and farmed one summer with them .On days off I would go down to the Souix River looking for arrowheads . Since 1977 I have enjoyed putting together a good collection . As my forum name goes "even a blindpig will find a acorn now and then" my collection grows ever so slowly now .
Now , one of my "acorns" in my collection is this hematite adze ,as you can see it's well worked [chipped ] and then with the "flute" on one side ,it makes for a "perfect" hollow-ground chisel. I have referred to a few books ,but I haven't seen any hematite tools worked to this degree . Any thougths on it would be appreciated . It 's 1 -1/4" W X 3" L

Sincerely; BLindpig DSC00065.webp

Very nice and welcome. You will fit right in here. Would love to see more of your collection.

Outstanding piece! We find the small celts here (Oklahoma) made of hematite. They usually are very well ground down and polished, etc. I started noticing frequently that there were knapping scars evident on them and it appears that is a common trait - knapped to form and then ground down. I really like that piece and it had great educational value, thanks for sharing it.

G'day,

Welcome to the forum. It will be interesting to see things to be found from the other side of the world. This is a place to learn and make friends to boot.

Happy Hunting,
