Intro. of a nubie that's been down & around
Hi all, I'm new to your forum ,I have been reading your post for the past 3 or 4 months now . First I like to complement a lot of you on your knowledge and willingness to help others . And for you new to this "field" , it appears to be an incredible resource for you [and me] .
I started out over 30 yrs. ago in central Australia . As a boy ,I can say I was fascinated by the Aboriginal culture . In school [thanks Mr. Shay] I was selected to spend some time in art & humanities classes with my Aboriginal class mates , I hope thay got something out of this cultural exchange . Also my family and I were befriended by the Chalmers family ,thay had a "few" cattle stations [ranches]. The Chalmers always [since first contact in 1919 ] had good relations with the native peoples . This relationship , provided me with a great resource to buy artifacts [spears ,boomerangs ,axe's ,etc..] to order ,not that tourist crap ! Also, it's in this time period [70's] that I started surface collecting stone artifacts to add to my collection .
In 1977 we moved back to the U.S. I stayed with my grandparent's in N.W. Iowa, and farmed one summer with them .On days off I would go down to the Souix River looking for arrowheads . Since 1977 I have enjoyed putting together a good collection . As my forum name goes "even a blindpig will find a acorn now and then" my collection grows ever so slowly now .
Now , one of my "acorns" in my collection is this hematite adze ,as you can see it's well worked [chipped ] and then with the "flute" on one side ,it makes for a "perfect" hollow-ground chisel. I have referred to a few books ,but I haven't seen any hematite tools worked to this degree . Any thougths on it would be appreciated . It 's 1 -1/4" W X 3" L
Sincerely; BLindpig
