Hey t-netters.... First beach trip for a pair of newbies. We went to Biloxi, Gulfport beaches in Mississippi for some beach pratice. The beach had a 4" sand overfill, no people using it and shows tracks of running sand sifters covering the whole beach. I thought, oh well, it will be good practice. My wife and I found lots of aluminum siding and trim and pieces of rebar. A few soda cans and tops. I did get a strong signal and dug through the new sand and down into the old darker colored sand. I dug up this lump and about pitched it into our trash bag when I noticed what looked like the edge of a coin. I washed it in the surf and more of it started to come out. It appears to be embedded into old rotting wood. The entire lump is very heavy and I'm thinking there's more inside. There are areas that have tiny sparkles showing that looks silver. My question for those of you in the know....... Should I or shouldn't I break the lump apart to retrieve the coin and look for more or will I be messing up a nice relic like it is????

Dig it out! Could be Spanish booty!

It's hard to tell from the picture. I would S.....L.....O.....W......L......Y pick at it until you can determine what it is!

I would: 2) check with the Fisher family enterprise and see what they recommend / if they recommend a conservator; and 1) post this on Shipwrecks here to see what the Wet Treasure people there recommend.

I sure wouldn't 'wildcat' any moves on something that potentially valuable until I checked with some true experts.

CONGRATULATIONS!

WOW...very interesting...I would be so tempted to see whats inside!! :icon_pirat:

When I was in college we'd take things over to the campus health clinic and have it x-rayed...

I agree! If you get too antsy and just break it open in haste, you might be ruining other items inside. It doesn't cost anything but time to get advice from others first and see if they have more experience with this find. Stefan had a good idea as well. :)

Opppppps....... It wasn't what I thought it was! Played around with it with a toothpick and got down to a square piece of metal on one side of the "coin". Dug out a pocket magnet and phtttttt, it stuck to the coin and square piece. Dug it out and it's a square headed screw through a washer. I'm guessing that electrolysis was working on the exposed edge because it shines like new silver. Sorry folks, but I had lots of fun for a few hours playing with it. Going again tonight and in the morning. No spring breakers here to lose things...... :-[

well it was nice while it lasted, bet you kinda wish you left it alone, then you could always wonder..nope I wouldn't be able to do that either.

it's like having a pack of unopened 1952 topps baseball cards, is the mantle in there? con grats!!!!!!!!!

I'd post it over at the Shipwrecks or Cobs board and let Trez or one of those guy look at it. They deal with that kind of stuff. Interesting to say the least. I'd of dug that one coin out already, but that's me.

Good luck with it.
Ken

I bet if you do a little electrolysis on it alot of that crud would loosen enough so you could easily take it apart

oh' yeah open it up,many of us have never seen made a find like that..sweet stuff

Congrats
