Is metal detecting allowed on Cozumel or in the water around the island?

I have never heard of any problems. Done it on and off for quite a few years and never been hasseled. Some all inclusive might be hard to get onto but the beaches are "federal zone" so technically they can't toss you off. I have also seen folks detecting at some of the beach clubs as well. I think the one exception is likely chancanab which I doubt will allow it. Don't expect virgin beaches. People have been working the beaches for many years.

Now if you are thinking of working on some of the wrecks then I am sure that INAH would not be too happy.

I've done some detecting on the beaches near some wrecks, but didn't go in the water. I was told there would be trouble if you were caught in the water near a wreck with a detector, but on land was OK. I never had any trouble at the resorts I went to, but I didn't have much luck either. Found enough pesos to get a grilled snapper though. :-)
