No one would have blamed the man had he invoked the rule of “finders, keepers.” But last fall Carlos put an ad in a local paper with an email address, giving a six-month deadline for the owner of the cash to claim it. He said, “I can be guilt-free that I did search and try my best to find the person.”

no seriously though , You mention you found cash in a book,
& say Describe the Book.
the fact they gave the book away means they didn't know it was there &
how many people give how many books away per year ?
that have or Could have money in them ?

Duh may as well just keep it.

why risk giving some self appointed authority a chance to decide to Investigate
and take it from you ?

I know it comes down to Immigrants & other foreign people try to be
more Honest, as they don't want to rock the boat that keeps them here.

Too bad I was working, you took the words right out of my mouth The only problem is that you put way too much thought into that, 6 seconds, Ha.. Took me only a fraction of a second to hit that conclusion

That cash was tossed in the dumpster because it was dirty money, and I for one, have no problem in handling dirty cash I handle trash every night, and if there's no name on anything I spy, it's mine PERIOD I don't have the time, resources, or interest in tracking down anyone

My general rule is anything I find in the trash or a dumpster is mine and will stay that way, unless it's got identification (to a living person) or looks to be evidence from a crime. I have no sympathy for people who throw out large amounts of cash or other valuables when cleaning out a dead relatives belongings. If it didn't matter enough to them to take a good look at what they were throwing out, it's not my place to correct them. I've found money, jewelry, other antiques, and on one occasion, grandpas gun collection, that the people thought were too old to be worth anything (boy were they wrong) If you don't take the time to think about what you're throwing out, well tough luck for you.

Thrown away is a big difference from lost. I will try to return lost items whenever I can track down the person who lost them.

The ( F B I ) the police and under cover againts all comb through the trash. They are looking for any thing that they can not get buy asking you for it. If it's in the trash it's legal for them to take and keep it. From D N A to your birth certificate. So if it's good enough for them, enjoy your find!

Hay this applies to the thrift stores, like Good Will. People give them things they consider worthless from a relatives estate. I once picked up a stainless steel Vitamix blender in a Good Will Store for $20. The newer ones which are made of plastic sell for $400. yes ive done some dumpster diving,and curb picking in the past,most expensive thing found was
a 2ct platinum dinner ring,in 81 it was valued at 5-6k, and it never crossed my mind to find the owner
they threw it away,your loss my gain, maybe the people cleaning out the estates should do a better
job,it was in a box of junk and not so expensive jewelry
i guess doing the find the owner ad,made dude feel better, so he could spend the $$ more freely
looked a lot like the one in img,except,it had 3 stones across the middle,instead of one stone
