Depends on the metal and what it's caked with.

also depends on the value of what's being cleaned , rare items are best left as found or cleaned by someone with experience . An old horse shoe,smack it with a hammer.
the point is don't devalue your find by cleaning.

For brass and other nonferrous metals I implore you to limit most cleaning to hot soapy water. For iron you can go farther because it isn’t typically valuable
