they all start to fall off at depth

An it doesn't make any difference if you pay an arm and a leg. They all give a lower volume tone on deep targets.
 

While the above responses are true (signal TID degenerates with depth), there are a few that are known for better ID at depth than others. Of course, it also depends on the user's ability to discern what the machine is saying. But with that aside, the Explorer is known for good ID at depth. Certain others, contrarily, have the distinction of basically loosing any accuracy, beyond 6".
 

There are two things at work. First, the signal will degrade past a certain depth since the detectors electromagnetic field loses intensity. Second, the ID will be pulled toward the iron/ferrous side of the spectrum because of the mineralization in the ground.
