No. Not true. It's a humorous myth (superstition) perpetuated in 3rd world back-woods type places.

The part of CA where I live, we have a lot of migrant field workers who come up from Mexico, follow the crops, etc... And sometimes some of them buy a metal detector, to take back with them to mexico (as there's no shortage of treasure legends and superstitions down there :)) The local metal detector dealer (a friend of mine) heard that old story about fumes or odors coming from the gold, that ..... eventually he stocks now gas masks (the type that auto-body shop workers use) to sell. And even though he thinks its a silly myth, he has sold a lot of those masks to these guys, who are simply convinced they will find gold and drop dead the minute they open the box :)
