Old iron axe. Looks like it was used as a wedge alot?
 

Found this at an early 1700 site 6.5 inches long. Blade is 4.5 inches weighs about 3lbs looks like it was used quite a bit. Thanks for your responses

Good look'm axe head plymouthian12! Bet it was heavy, and kind of a pain to haul out of the woods....but certainly worth doing. Congrats!

It has the shape of a fairly modern axe - say last 100 years. Pounding on it has apparently not broken the handle hole, which it usually does on older, handmade axes. There may be a maker's mark near the poll end which could be revealed by mechanical cleaning. I use wire brushes in an electric hand drill and sometimes light surface grinding to clean up axeheads. Some I display and some I put into use.
