Is this a DDR? Or am I imagining things?

So, I picked up my 2nd half dollar box Wednesday. Sadly it was a skunk for silver. So I decided to check for any DD's or S mint marks my amateur eye could pick up. So far I have 4 or 5 potentials and I scanned the best which I attached below. The scan appears to have picked up more doubling than my naked eye could see. It almost appears as if the whole reverse is doubled to some extent or another.

It's a 1973 D Kennedy Half Dollar. The doubling I could see with my naked eye was the LF DOLLAR. The scan however appears to show doubling on much of the rest of the reverse. Areas I saw in the scan show what appears to be doubling on the rest of the lettering, the shield, the feathers, etc. It looks like the doubling is on the left of everything.

Not sure if I'm imagining doubling or if this is a true DDR of some sort. Nor any clue on worth or condition. I've only recently started getting back into coin collecting.

Take a look and tell me if it's all in my head and any info about this if it's a known DDR. I also have no idea how to get it to be small in post but clickable to be larger. Sorry. :P

Here is a more manageable picture of Kamyu's half.

Shows machine doubling, but not DDR I believe. There is a fine line, based on what you can see with a 10x loupe. I often find doubling with a 30x microscope I use for checking coins. Many coins, possibly most, show some doubling under higher power magnification. But these are not considered true DDRs. Good question, though.

Hrm, hadn't heard of machine doubling before. I thought that was what DD was. :P So basically I have a machine double half here then? So basically worth 50 cents and toss back? Or is it actually worth anything? I've heard of the 1974's having DD varieties. Anyone got a pic for reference so I know what to look for in the future?

When I saw DDR I immediately thought of East Germany and the Berlin wall but I guess I was wrong. Sorry but I am no help on this topic.

Yepper, worth 50 cent.

Kamyu,

The best resource for explaining all the different types of doubling is the Cherry Picker's Guide. You might be able to find a copy in a larger bookstore and just read the section on Doubled Dies vs Machine Doubling right there in the store. The main difference is the Doubled Die actually has the doubling on the die itself from when the die is made from the hub (I think it's called the hub). While machine doubling occurs on the coin when it's struck. There are several different classes of doubling, and some are valuable and some aren't. I'm still learning.

It's easy to spot the 74 D DDO, and can even be seen without magnification on high grade coins (if you have good eyes!). The Redbook has a great picture of the 1974 D DDO, you should be able to check it out for free as well at any decent book store. The doubling is prominent on the letters RUS of TRUST to the right of Kennedy's bust. I've found almost a full roll of 74 D DDOs in my CRH exploits. I average about one out of every fifty 1974 Ds....
