Is this a spanish reale?

Looks gold but is silver. found in western virginia. Date is 1821 lettering says: ferdin VII DEI GRATIA BACK OF COIN: HISPAN ET IND REX M 8 R T

Your coin looks like (and you describe it as) a Mexican 8-reales issued in the last year of Fernando VII's rule in Mexico--although Spanish troops held Fort San Juan de Ulua until 1835. That coin should measure 40 mm and weigh in at just over 27 grams. You mentioned the description on the reverse. Could there be a "J" initial after the 8 R. H.?
