It looks like it has layers to the metal so maybe a knife of some kind?

My opinion on your item is that it is a square piece of rusted metal that still has a lot of rust build-up. You could carefully take a hammer and knock off most of that rusty overburden and it most likely will be the same thickness through out it's length. As for what it was used for is anyone's guess.

Allison88 either item you asked if it might be, would have a taper to a point and yours is blunt.It is square stock metal.A fort would have a blacksmith so it could have been just that, square stock that would have been hammered into whatever item was needed.IMO

Looks like an old chisel. If you clean it & it is square at the tip...a broken chisel or maybe a lock pin of some kind? Similar "chisels"

Still looks like a rail spike with the head missing, they did come in different sizes for different gauge rails, I find a lot of 3" ones from the mine buggy tracks around here.View attachment 1323787mine gauge spike
