After the other great posting on the subject... I'm posting this.. I found it early this year.. at the same site I dug the 2 reales, 2 George III coppers and a bunch of dandies... after googling I am pretty sure it is a trade axe.. I found pics of ones just like it... with out the back blown out...

Thanks,
MonkeyBoy

Try to figure them out myself!! This is the first one I've dug that looks early.. I matched up the style on a few webpages.. and it was either listed as a trade axe or a beltaxe.. sooo??

Yeah.. seems like they are late in harvesting around here too!! Let me know.. I "need" some attrib'ed find form over there!!! ;-)

Not sure the term "Trade Axe" is it, but your axe does match the photos of the small belt type axes listed in Neumann and Kravic's book on Rev War era artifacts. Their book has a rather comprehensive pictorial display of the various different axes from the mid to late 18th century.

Thanks! That fits perfectly with the timeframe of the house site and the other artifacts I found there.. almost all of it 1812-1814 and before.. including one turrent (sp?) back button.. and plenty of dated coins from the 1700s..

again.. thanks for the info...

Yep, too bad about the break.

Here's mine from last year. Took a long time to find one in decent condition. It's my second but the first was was bent out of shape, probably made into a wedge.
