Definitely looks like a tree!

The first thing to consider is the age of the tree.

it's stump regeneration growth . a tree was cut and that's the new stump growth. it means nothing other than a tree was cut.

I see 4 trees in the picture
#1-The left one at 45•
#2-The next angled tree
#3-The large tree
#4-The widow maker to the right
What mark are you referring to?

If it is the lighter shading that runs up the larger tree it would be that you are viewing from the north side of the tree and this (moss) growing on it.

It's just a natural thing that happens in nature, good thing to remember when going off the trail-and one needs to get the bearing of direction.

I'm sure that answer will have a few stumped.:)

no .. not a trail marking tree .. any tree of that age might have had a marker placed on it, if it was along a trail .. but not what you're think of with a trail marking tree .. very few original marker trees still exist .. long removed, back during the lumbering and land clearing days.

Knot that it's a bad thing to do.

That's true bud, but it leaves no room for twiggy. But that's okay, didn't want to see her crotch anyway.

We've gotten to the root of the issue, might be time to leaf it alone.

I agree .. Let's pack it in the trunk and set it under the canopy.

Thank you for the info, I was not sure if it was natural or not. I pointed it out because there is a GIANT tree behind it with a stone with symbols.
