Could be Onyx, same material as agate just different banding structure, I've seen a lot of onyx carved items recently including this....

Question: Is it egg shaped? I am thinking it is not a paper weight, I think it is a sock darning egg.

It is onyx. A variety of calcite. Agate is much harder, and is a quartz mineral. Eggs are made as a "just for fun" kind of carving. My mom had a collection of various stone eggs I still have.
