Is this an old key?

Dug this last weekend near an 18th century cellar hole and not sure what it is. It appears to be a key but i'm not sure. It's definitely iron and a royal pain to clean up. Did about an hour so far with electrolysis and filing but still a bit crusty.

Any help is much appreciated!

Actually, in its current state, its simply a blob of rust with shaped somewhat key-like

Looks display-case ready to me

I'll guess at a broken thumb latch from a door handle.
