Is this for real,metal driver's license?

? ?South Carolina driver's license,expiring June 30.1945(my birth date) issued to John Booker Tatum,box 295,Taylors,S.C.,tag has vital stats on the reverse and states "S.C. state highway dept.,motor vehicle division.Were these for real?I've only known paper and plastic license.

Yeap,

They used to offer a license without a picture. Hard to believe, huh! These are quite common to find, not metal detecting, but estate sales and the such. These were made into the late 1950's, at least in SC. I can't speak for other states.
