Hi Treasurenet this is my first post.
Other than introducing myself.
Been combing an area in a local park
where there was an old bandstand.
I've gotten a few good buttons in this spot
last week I got this one with my safari
Back says
Scovill & Co EXTRA
I know it's navy. But my question is
Is this a civil war button or post?
It's a little smaller than a dime in circumference

If someone doesn't chime in soon with your id, I'll look it up in my book. In any case that is one sweet button!! Congrats.

Scovills & Co was used as that company's backmark from 1840 to 1850, so it's probably not Civil War era.

Okay looks like a Marine Corps button actually, rather than Navy, but Civil War era or prior so sweet find. Made between 1830's and 1840's.

There's an anchor on the shield
And stars around the eagle
Might have a sprig in his mouth
and is standing on a branch or line of ground
It's tiny
Found a similar one on Google
said it was civillian 1800-1820 ish but idk
no backmark

Not civilian at all. That is an 1820s era Navy button, and it is a GREAT find!

Wow..ty Buckleboy and once again everyone else! I'm gonna head back to this area around 10 am I had no clue either button was that early: )
