Is this really old or repro with modern patina?

Not a dug item but picked this up at a garage sale. Is this modern applied patina or is it possibly very old? Not my specialty...

It looks genuinely very old but hard to be certain.
You could always take it to a local museum or archaeologist.

Hi Gregg,
I found a vase (thrift shop) very similar to yours only with out the encrustation (maybe yours looked like this at one time).
There is a marking on the bottom of the vase I have which may be on the vase you have as well.
As to maker/era I'm thinking Craftsman Period.

I have a vase like that too! It was my father’s vase. To my understanding, it is Japanese artisan and the patina or encrustation is actually an intentional style of glazing. These were not meant to be passed off as antiquities but growing up I always imagined the vase coming from a shipwreck or something. I don’t know more than that but one of my siblings might remember more details.

Its possible that we have 3 different types of glazing or finish but they are all in fact Japanese sorori-vase. I thought mine was ceramic but it sets off my pin pointer so apparently its bronze? Watercolor's looks like it could possibly be done with a "murashido" finish -

Japan, a one of a kind hand cast bronze vase masterfully hand finished in a sumptuous murashido red oil spot patina with green and dark brown highlights. Murashido is a dipping technique where the hot bronze is covered in oil immediately after firing and then exposed to rice straw smoke.
