Found this today with my best bud Jeff at a park in NJ. The field butts up to a beautiful, well maintained 1700s estate. There’s one spot that I always avoid due to it being along the road and littered with beer cans. Wasn’t finding much all day so we decided to finish here since we’ve pulled a few early 1800s coppers in the past. It was getting late so I cranked up descrimination on the legend and told myself I’m only digging coin tones. Jeff comes over to check out a half cent I found moments before, and while he’s looking at it I swung the coil over a very faint “largie” tone. I cut a plug and out pops the heaviest copper I’ve ever held. We thought for sure it was mid 1800s due to the weight/thickness. Couldn’t make out much detail so I tossed it in the box. We decide to end the day on that hole and as we’re hopping in the truck I pull the coin out and throw a toothpick in my pocket, figuring I might get the date on the way home. As I’m toothpicking in the passenger seat, I notice the bust looks very different and then I see the 17 at the bottom! I start frantically googling and find what I think is a match, a flowing hair large cent. But the photo has the chain link design on the reverse. I google flowing hair wreath and then this coin pops up. One I didn’t even know existed. Still in shock, frankly. Anyone seeing what I’m seeing?

Congrats on a great find !

It's entirely up to you but ...
you'll probably be able to see a lot more detail on the coin by using "Andre Pencils".
I've gotten real nice results cleaning old Copper Coins with them.

Thanks E Trac! I normally would pick away at it but I’m a lil gun shy on this one. Anyone know of a place that will do cleaning?

Congrats on the old copper.
