WP_20161107_12_35_38_Pro.webpI went treasure hunting at the railroad tracks near my house and I wanted to look for gold in quartz. I know there are veins but are there also gold flakes in quartz too? The pictures might not be good quality but tell me what you think!WP_20161107_12_16_52_Pro.webpView attachment 1379212

I can not see anything but a glare and marks on your mag lens

I'm gonna lean towards pyrite on this one. Only way to know for sure is crush and pan.

Unsure in your photos as far as if it's gold or not. Guess a closer up more detailed photo would be best.

To answer your question yes you could find gold flaking on quartz specimens that haven't really been chipped away to expose the underlying gold yet. I guess if your piece of quartz is at the outer edge of the deposit then only a couple of flakes may be present in your specimen.

Mostly they look similar to this one. I wonder how much is really in there but I'm unwilling to smash it too see. Total weight is 1.71 grams on this one. It's pretty fragile so I don't really handle it much. Lost a couple little pieces of gold and quartz just taking these photos. Think they call it crystalline gold?

Can't tell from your pictures but.......One of the things I like about gold identification is that gold looks like gold under direct and indirect light while most if not all other minerals change colors under those conditions. Have you looked at what you have under those conditions?

Good luck.

Gold will "glow" gold anywhere. If you have a yellow gold ring, drop it in your pan and look at it in all different kinds of light. Gold will always be gold and never flash.

Was it found in an area where gold has been found ? I will never understand why people are afraid to post their location.

They might have stumbled onto the motherlode no one else knows about! :laughing7:

By the looks of that picture, you got nothing but pyrite if anything at all.
